is a German architect, media artist and scientist. Born near Nuremberg, grown up in Neuendettelsau, he studied and worked in Berlin and Bonn, today he works in Berlin and Gargnano. He is a Research Artist at Fraunhofer IAIS, Sankt Augustin and since 2009 Guest-Professor for Experimental Interaction in the HCI Master at University Siegen. Strauss taught Architecture as assistant of Prof. Ingeborg Kuhler at University of the Arts (UdK) Berlin (former Hochschule der Künste) and has been head of R & D for interactive and mixed reality environments at Fraunhofer research institutes (IAIS | IMK), were he built up the MARS Exploratory Media Lab since 1997 together with Fleischmann. Before, he was a co-founder of Art+Com e.V. Berlin, a fellow of Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln and research fellow at GMD Institute for Media Communication Sankt Augustin. He was appointed Guest Professor for Interactive Media Art at Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar, Saarbrücken, Kunsthochschule Kassel and University Siegen. Strauss has conducted international invited lecture tours, received numerous awards, and produced international exhibitions.
Wolfgang Strauss creates real buildings as well as electronic architecture, knowledge space and digital archives.
He has produced a large number of media art and design objects and
environments on the topics of networked information space and the
visualisation of knowledge. His recent R+D activities ranging from
knowledge discovery, artistic installations and interventions in public space (Energie-Passagen), applications (Interactive Poster) or intuitive interfaces (Virtual Balance) such as the patented PointScreen
interface or new scientific tools.
In 1998/99 he conceived the internationally recognized online archive for media art and electronic
culture - netzspannung.org in cooperation with Monika Fleischmann.
Track record: International invited lecture tours, numerous awards, international exhibitions and publications on media art, mixed reality, pervasive computing, interface and interaction design. He published more than 100 scientific papers, artistic essays and theoretical articles, and received 22 awards – amongst them the Golden Nica for interactive Art of Ars Electronica, the iF communication design award for Energie-Passagen in 2005, and for Medienfluss Internet-Browser in 2007/08 and the Medida-Prix for netzspannung.org in 2005/2010.

MONIKA FLEISCHMANN & WOLFGANG STRAUSS
artistic and scientific works of Monika Fleischmann and Wolfgang Strauss is internationally
recognized, exhibited and awarded. At the interface between art, science,
technology and society they develop methods, models and works to link real and virtual
space in an emerging media-culture.
In 1988 Monika Fleischmann & Wolfgang Strauss started to work on the
topic of Virtual
Reality and Mixed Reality combining real objects and virtual
environments. In 1998 they carried out the requirements of an online competence centre for art, culture and new media. This feasability study on Communication of Art & Technology (CAT) was supported by the BMBF and accompanied with generous funding for media art research platform netzspannung.org.
In 2002 the Fraunhofer IMK - MARS Exploratory Media Lab was
invited by Itau Cultural in Sao Paulo, Brazil as one of the 15

In 2008/09 their online archive for media arts is exhibited at ZKM Center for Art & Media Technology in Karlsruhe: netzspannung.org –
performing the archive. At the same time one of their first media art works Liquid Views of 1992 was presented in Seville, Spain in YOUniverse at BIACS (2008/09). Liquid Views and netzspannung.org were also part of the YOUser II exibition at ZKM in Karlsruhe 2009 and of Ars Electronica History Lounge 2009.
